Collaboration: CONTEXT Landscape Architecture
The Concrete Star bench as its affectionately known, was developed in conjunction with CONTEXT Landscape Architecture for the entranceway and forecourt of a prominent Sydney university.
The challenge
The initial landscape design consisted of a number of concrete benches in various sizes and shapes. MIchelle Herbut was initially engaged to complete the design development of the benches, ready for specification. But after getting an understanding of the project Michelle was quick to point out the cost implications, with each concrete bench requiring its own mould and with the low quantity, could blow the budget.
Our solution
Michelle worked through a number of sketch ideas which consisted of different concrete shapes that by connecting at different points, would create different seating opportunities. Thus the concrete star bench was created. The concrete form is shaped in a way that can be stand-alone, connected in a star shape, or in an L or U configuration. The concrete form can house either a fabricated metal or combination metal/timber bench or seat, again providing flexible seating options. The bench can also be used as a backrest if you sit on the ground and lean back against it. Integrated lighting was also a consideration, as it would assist with the landscape plan.
The result
“The solution Michelle developed, really allowed us to be creative with connecting the landscape to the bench configurations. The flexibility provided by a single item, in terms of colour and materiality, has provided a high quality solution” says Hamish Dounan, CONTEXT director.
Michelle Herbut was an employee of Street Furniture Australia during this period and the benches are a proprietary item of SFA.
